Merry Christmas & Swap Ornies

It's been record setting busy this Holiday Season at Old Branch Hollow! Lots of concerts, parties, shopping, decorating, and a trip to Colorado thrown in there too. I'm certainly ready to spend some time at home, and do some baking.

I am way overdue to share photos of the wonderful ornaments I received in Amy's swap.

The first three are all from Theresa. You can visit her lovely etsy shop HERE. Her cross stitch is SO tiny. Gorgeous!

This snowman is from Marie/ Old Lady Morgan. Awesome, right? She used the best wiggly twigs for his arms, and his tags were so cute, I left them on. LOVE him.

The final 3 are all from Patti/Raspberry Lane Primitives. There's a wooden peppermint candy and chenille candy cane, both thrimmed with greenery and sweet annie. Santa is made of wool, with a wool beard, and he smells like Cinnamon. So cute and PERFECT on my tree.

Although my crappy photography skills aren't doing any of these ornies justice. I adore them all, and am so grateful to my swap partners for such generous gifts.Thank you to Amy at Bumble Bee Lane for hosting.

Y'all know what a bad blogger I am, so I'll wish you all the Merriest Christmas now. Enjoy this special time of year with those you love...

Early Work Mercantile Update

I know I've been quiet for a while now. Both boys are in marching band and we are right in the midst of our busiest part of the season, with games on Friday nights and all day competitions on Saturdays. I've been spending every spare second in my studio, working toward my first ever update on Early Work Mercantile. I'm so honored to be a part of this group. I'm a little star struck, with so many of my most admired folk artists there. The Santa above is one of my offerings this month.

I've got a ton to do today. First off though is an overdue appointment with my hair stylist. Gotta hide those greys!

Tuesday Display Chain week #3...

This week's theme is Fall Foilage-Nature on Display. We don't have much af a Fall season here in north Texas, so our Fall foilage looks pretty much like our Summer foilage-green with a few crispy edges. Normally, I'm raking leaves while hubby is hanging the Christmas lights on December 1st! So, my display is pretty weak. Just some faux foilage I have inside the house.

I truly miss Ohio this time of year. I'm sure I'll be envious when I see all the beautiful colors as I check in with the other ladies today. Stop by Misi's blog to see for yourself...

Tuesday Display Chain Week 2

For this week's display, Misi asked us to choose two colors for just one display. The choices were black and orange, black and white, or black and green. I chose black and white...

This chest of drawers sits at the top of the stairs. On my way to the computer, I saw this little vignette, so I snapped a pic of it too. That sweet little witch was made by Jan, of Big Brown Dog Primitives. Love her! So I know this puts me at two, but I couldn't resist.

That's it for me today. I'm busy working on a few more things for Fall. I hope to have some things for my selling blog and etsy this week. We'll just have to see how busy the family decides I will be! Please stop by 1890 Gablehouse Musings to see all the lovely displays.

Misi's Fall Display Chain Week # 1 Framed In

After a very busy summer, I need a kick in the behind to get back into the blogging routine. Misi's display chain is always fun, and just what I need to get going again. Yes, this normally happens on Tuesday, but my scheduled post didn't appear yesterday. We'll say it was Blogger misbehaving again, not user error. Misi is graciously allowing me to link up a little late, being the sweet natured girl that she is. This week's theme is "Framed In".
Here is my take on this theme...

A giant key inside an empty antique mirror frame.

Some old quilt squares. Oops. One is crooked. Oh heck, they're all crooked.

A corkboard I made that hangs outside the pantry.

An empty vintage frame just propped behind to add a little somethin'.

An old oyster crate that "frames" some dried gourds on the mantle.

Soda crate on the hearth framing a painted basket.

The legs of this mustard table frame the grapevine pumpkin nicely.

A big box from 1890 Gable House Goodes...

Last week I received my Scavenger Hunt prize package from Misi, and I've been anxious to share it with you since. But, between sharing my computer with my now working from home hubby, sharing my camera with a travelling son, and all the other nonsense that is crammed into the end of the school year, it hasn't happened. I did snap a few photos right after I opened the heavenly scented box, so that's what I'll show you for now.

This box was crammed with so many wonderful things, I don't know where to start! It was all so beautifully presented and packaged!

See what I mean-overwhelmingly wonderful! Click the photo for a better look, and excuse my crappy, hurried photography. Oh, it smells SO good. Misi packed in tons of her yummy creations- an Apple Dowdy candle in a wax covered jar, a Bliss Bee jar candle, wax tarts in the same scents, and three of the coolest tallow-ish candles I've ever seen. I have to smell them whenever I walk by them-I can't figure out exactly what it is they smell like, but I LOVE it. There's also a big bag of potpourri in Gable House Tea scent, some springy wax covered bowl fillers, the sweetest little twig wreath with tiny purple flowers, and 14 egg gourds all packaged up with some nesty stuff and feathers.

And the fabric covered boxes! The one with George Washington's portrait on the top has the best feathery print fabic on the sides. Then there are two round ones covered with the most gorgeous fabrics. They're just my colors, and all tied up with string and Sweet Annie. Also, a lovely ditty bag done in a teeny green print with a portrait of a soldier on on it. It's hanging on an old ladder in the kitchen waiting for a bunch of drieds. And the neatest pillow with a portrait of a Colonial Woman on it, she has an old locket stitched on in just the right place. Misi also thoughtfully included one of Cinnamon Creek Cabin's incredible old bears.

Isn't he fabulous? It's so difficult to get your hands on one of these guys, and I'm just thrilled to have him. The old silk ribbon has been in my stash for a while, just waiting for the right bear or doll...He's so cute!

How does one say Thank You for such a generous prize? Opening this box was truly better than Christmas, and I love each and every piece. Thank you Misi, for hosting the most creative scavenger hunt ever, and for this over the top prize box of goodies! I will share more photos once I get my camera/computer/life back. Scavenger Hunt Week 4...part 3

Flowers and furbabies. I have both, but getting a photo of them together proved to be a challenge! So we'll start with the cooperative ones that allowed me to photograph them as I liked. This is our central bed out front.

That's a tiny picture, I don't know why...Next is my salvia under the live oak. It's taken 4 years for them to finally look good.

And my pot on the front porch. I've had the pot since we were newlyweds, and I love it because of the adventure that took place to aquire it.

Now for the naughty boy that won't sit still for pictures. We have to snap them quick because he starts to jump as soon as he sees the camera. But I did get a quickie of him with my yarrow. You can even see my zinnia seedlings popping up back there. Ears back...wouldn't Ceasar say that shows a calm, submisive state? Only for a second maybe. This is Bruno. He's a 6 year old Boston Terrier.

This is where he prefers to hang out-by the pool. Just like his pack leader. :~)

And here he is, sporting another new collar... My favorite picture of him.

We bought the biggest pair of pumps we could find at the Goodwill and gave them a makeover. After the party, he wanted nothin' to do with these lovely slippers.

I have to tell you, I'd never used the Sally Hanson Diamond Strength polish before, and I'm really impressed. I've been working in my gardens all week, so have been putting off a manicure because I'd just ruin it. I put a couple of coats on one night , without a base or top coat. I worked all the next day outside. I hate to wear gloves when I plant, thus my hands are a mess. Anyway, this polish hadn't worn away on the tips at all. I just put on a clear topcoat, and it looks as good as new. Plus, it's less expensive that my normal brand. Love it!

I'll be posting part two later on today. I just gotta climb up in the attic, and even worse, IRON something!

Scavenger Hunt Week 2...

I'm always pushing a deadline, huh? I 've been trying to get back to normal all week, after a terrific Spring Break in San Francisco. LOVE that city! Anyway, I finally got all my things together today for the Scavenger Hunt display. This week our list was:

The Scavenger Hunt...

I was able to find all but 1, the pastry roller. I know I have one, but I can't find it anywhere. So, five out of six is pretty good. I wish I'd chosen a better spot for my display, but I was looking for a room with good light. Looking at the photos now, I can see several better ways to have arranged my things. Here's the close up:

You can click on the photo for a closer look. The cradle is an antique one I found in my hometown a few summers ago. There is a sweet little faceless dollie from Square Nails, and a little Amish boy I made from old materials. The grey homespun pillow behind them is from our guest bed. The big doll I found on eBay, and she wears a real Amish baby dress. I always keep my seeds from the previous season in these old jars, so I just grabbed some out of the laundry room. . I love Ironstone, and have it displayed in several places around the house.

This wire shelf might be my favorite thing in the house. I keep my sentimental pieces here, and I just love looking at them all together. Please be sure to stop by Misi's blog each week to keep up with the scavenger hunters!

A project complete...

Summer has been so very busy for our family so far, but I've been able to squeeze in a little time here and there on "my stuff". I had this small bookcase in my donate pile after some tweaking in my younger son's room. We needed a place to put my husband's favorite books in the office, so this was the right size, just ugly as all get out. I forgot to take a before, but here's what it looked like-fake natural pine, but with the back panel painted navy blue. (It had been in two toddler/little boy rooms).

I already had all the stuff, except the two small rosettes, so I just went to it, figuring I had nothing to lose. I attached the moldings with wood glue and my brad nailer. Having never painted this kind of fake wood before, I just did what I would do to prep the real thing, a light sanding with 120 grit sandpaper. I was pretty confident though, because I was using a super duper high quality Benjamin Moore paint. It's latex but goes on and wears like oil. So awesome. It got two coats of black, and probably three of the tan to cover the navy on the back.

I lightly distressed the edges, and gave the whole thing a coat of Early American stain. I normally use a dark walnut, but I knew the laminate wouldn't absorb the color like the wood moldings, so this looks more uniform.

Here's a terrible shot of the whole wall. This room is dark without the overhead lights on. I spent less than $5 on the top rosettes, and accessorized with what I already had. Notice the gum machine is empty? And the keys are in the top? It is impossible to find the old square bubble gums, and everything else gets stuck.So it's pretty much an oversized candy dish for whatever we find at Costco...

So happy with my cheapie makeover! Now I'm off to watch Wall-e on this rainy afternoon! My little guy is growing up on me so fast-I'm thrilled that he still wants to watch old movies with Mom.

I used a random number generator to pick, but I couldn't get that to show up here either. A little Spring Giveaway...

I've been super busy, working on several projects here around the house, but most are still not quite finished, so I have little to share. I'm putting the finishing touches on both the boy's bedrooms, they still need valances on the windows and one bed needs a skirt to hide the scary mess that always seems to be there. I'll share some pix of those when they're all done. I'll have to be quick, cause you know they won't stay clean for long. Well, not what they call "Mom clean" anyway! I've also been cleaning out the flower beds and landscaping outside. The weather has been gorgeous here, so I'm enjoying being outside, and can begin planting in mid April. My house is mostly in chaos as I try to Springify and lighten everything up. Here's the only area I'm somewhat happy with so far. I love my giant island, but everything tends to get lost on it, so I tried to think big. I love to mix my primitive stuff with more European Country/Farmhouse things. It's just what this house calls for, and I'm tryin' to listen!

I bought the smallest pitcher at an antique mall years ago. The other two were finds at the Thrift store. I'm sure I paid under $5.00 each for them.

I've also been working on a little giveaway. I appreciate each and every reader, so I've put together a Spring Offering...

Included is a cute Chubby Bunny that I made from a Kentucky Primitives pattern, a wire basket filled with 6 paper mache eggs, and a little paper covered journal. All are distressed for a warm old look. The momogram on the journal will be replaced with the winner's initial of choice. (The K isn't permanently affixed) Sorry, my beloved blue chair isn't included! I will choose a winner by random drawing on Thursday, March 25th. I know that's not a lot of sign up time, but I want to be sure it arrives at least a bit before Easter. So, here are the rules...

It's even Snowin' in Texas!

We rarely ever believe the weatherman when he says snow in Texas. So we were surprised to wake up to the white stuff lightly covering the ground, and huge clustered flakes falling fast. School was cancelled, we're having a real live snow day here! There's probably 3 or 4 inches out there right now and it's still falling, the thich, wet and sticky kind. My little one said "This isn't even Texas snow, it's like real snow!" So if you can stand any more pics of snow, here are a few of Dallas snowstorm, 2010. I had to snap these pretty early this morning, before the kids made tracks across the beautiful blanket on the back yard...it's quite a bit deeper now.

My son is currently working on the "biggest snowball ever", and there is already a huge pile of we clothes by the back door. This is snowman #1.

I know those of you buried in several feet are laughing at our dusting of snow.Most of you are so sick of it, and tired of being snowed in, but for a bunch of Ohioans, we are pretty excited. We don't usually get more than an inch or so of the dry, blowing stuff. Seeing all of your beautiful, white photos, I was frankly, a little jealous. The little guy above is our native Texan, and I think he's most excited of all. I'm just happy to have my boys at home with me for the day, making cookies and watching movies in our sweats with the fireplace burning. It will be gone tomorrow, so we gotta cram it all into one snow day! Thanks for bearing with me...

Frames,Quilt Blocks, and WWW...

I love old quilts! I have several single quilt blocks that I've gathered over the years. I've picked them up at flea markets and antique stores, and a few at the TS. It feels a little sad to see part of someone's unfinished quilt, and I wonder what happened to the rest, and why it wasn't completed. So they always have to come home with me if they are reasonably priced. I finally decided to do something with them. This week I've been on the hunt for some square picture frames. Any excuse to go to a thrift store, right? I managed to find just one frame out of 4 stores, but it was the right size for my favorite block, the red basket. It was hard to get a good photo with the glass and the gloomy weather-it's a nice deep red, and the white parts are naturally aged to perfection! I found this block in an antique store in Lebanon Ohio, nearly 20 years ago. My husband and I spent a Sunday afternoon there, having lunch and browsing the antique stores. We didn't have much extra money then, so after a nice lunch, that little red block was probably all I could afford that day. Everything was so expensive, but I have the best memories of that day. It's a shame that it's taken SO long for me to do something with it. These will all go in my guest room. The simple nine patch blocks are pretty sturdy, so I may make them into throw pillows for the bed . I don't know the name of the other one, but it's really well done and aged so nicely too.

I was also able to finish up a cross stitch that I've been working on. It's just aida cloth, so it went pretty quickly. I'm learning to stitch on linen, and it's really difficult for me and my old eyes! Not sure what's up with my camera today-it's making all the reds too bright. This is really much more rusty and subtle.

I'm looking for a frame to prim up for it as well. So that's about it from me.I've been busy with cleaning, organizing and general house stuff, so not a lot of creative time. Please be sure to check in with Leslie at My Country Home to see what everyone else is up to!

I've been working on several things, but these are the only two that are complete. So I'll start with this tin star shaped light that my Mother-in law gave me years ago. It has a glass chimney, which always seemed undersized. I used the chimney on something else, so the light has been tucked away for a few years now. I've also had this huge silicone bulb for a looong time. It's so big, I could never find the right lamp for it. When I was organizing (yes, really, I was) I got inspired and decided to experiment with a pillar sized slipcover for the candle.

I just used the cardboard circles from a spool of ribbon and some posterboard to make the cylinder. I covered it with some grocery sack, and added glue gun drips. Then I just painted it ivory and antiqued it with some water based antiqueing medium. I've always loved this little lamp, and now it's perfect for this spot in a dark hallway. When the jumbo bulb burns out, I'll just remove the pillar sleeve, and resume the search for a more proportionate glass globe.

I also want to share my Valentine's day Wreath with you. I was fortunate enough to snag the sweetest Cupid ornament from Robin of Bird in the Hand Primitives. This was her prototype for this new pattern, so I'm really thrilled to have him. Robin's work is fantastic-he's so well made. I knew he'd be the perfect centerpiece for a twiggy wreath, so I made several hearts in different reds,burgandy, pink and some muslin ones too. Those were supposed to be stitched with phrases like "Be Mine" and "Love", but whatever. Next year.

Isn't he the best? It was hard to get a good photo without all the glare on the glass, but it looks much better in person. (If you click on the photo it will enlarge) So now I'm ready for Valentine's day. Especially the chocolate!

Doughbox Makeover

It's been a pretty low key Monday around here. The boys are out of school, so there is plenty of noise from video games and the never ending arguments. No fist fights yet, so that's a plus. But, between laundry and other glamorous chores, I was able to finish up a TS find that has been hanging around in the garage too long. Here's the before shot. Sorry it's all taken apart at this point, I got a little overzealous and almost forgot to get a photo. It's a 1960's "Early American" piece.

I don't mind the turned legs at all, in fact I really like them, but I thought the curvy apron around the bottom really made it look less authentic, so I covered it with some flat molding I had left over from some other project. I sprayed the hinges first, with some black Rustoleum Hammered finish paint, then I painted the rest black. I sanded the edges and then rubbed the whole thing down with Special Walnut stain. It's now in my media room, waiting for the perfect lamp. It was hard to get decent pics, since it is so dark in there, but I think you get the idea. Not bad for $8.00 and some spare time.

It's deep, so there's lot's of room for the junk that accumulates in the room. LOVE that!

Can I get a Do-over?

On this blogging thing? I mean, I have to be in the top 10 worst bloggers for 2009. So let me start over, and try again. I'm much more organized this January than last, so let's hope I can keep that up. I am currently on hiatus at TDIPT Mercantile, but am planning to have some offerings ready for Spring, probably April. My work this year will be a reflection of what I really love. Old, worn, well loved dollies, and Santas. I've pulled out some inspiration fabrics and remnants. The basket below will be sitting on the work table in my sewing room, along with my pattern making materials, all ready for me to get started... There are indigos, double pinks, ticking, drab browns, and antique coverlet pieces in there.

The big doll is Lizzie. Sometimes she wears homespun or indigos, but today she's Amish. That's a real Amish baby dress she's wearing.* Love it* The little boy I made ages ago, out of old materials. They'll be reminding me to keep it simple.

Since today is Whatcha Workin on Wednesday at one of my favorite blogs, Leslie's My Country Home, I'll join in with one of my first re-dos of the new year. These are just those basic pine cheese boxes you've all seen. Below is the larger one, I stained it back in the 80's when everything had to be stained. It's been on top of my kitchen cabinets unseen, to lift up some baskets I have displayed there. The smaller one I found at the thrift, with an ugly mauve painted wood cutout that said "Welcome" hot glued to the top. I peeled that baby off and left it right on there on the store shelf.

I painted them in my favorite blues. I am loving them now, and have to move some stuff around to find them a prominent home.

So I'm off for now, there's lots on my to-do list today. But first, I think I'll grab a Diet Coke, and read a few blogs!

It seems my blog was abandoned for longer than I care to admit. It's been a crazy-busy summer so far, and I can't type straight when there are so many things knocking around in my head. We've still got plenty on the calendar, but I'm getting more organized. Stop giggling.

My parents were here from Ohio for a visit, so I'll leave you with a photo of my Mom and I at First Monday Trade Days in Canton. It was only 102 that day, so we barely broke a sweat. Got a few treasures in spite of allowing 4 males to go along. Miss you already Mom!

I'm sorry it's been so long between posts. I'm just getting over a cold and sinus infection. I started what was supposed to be a real quick redo of our guest bath before I got sick. It's not quite finished, but I'll give you a sneaky peek at my inspiration...
This is only part of the mess I created for my family to walk around. There's lots more around the corner. Why does it take every tool in the garage to complete the simplest tasks?

Here's a before photo of another little side project I picked up yesterday. I have several old spoons that I'd like to display, so I'm re-vamping this old 70's looking thing. I've got some plans for him...

Whatcha Working on Wednesday...

It's Wednesday again, and I have a few finished projects to share this week. First is this little red bench. I found it unfinished at the TS for $2, just your basic little pine piece from a craft store. I had a before picture, but it's disappeared from the memory stick. My husband gets delete happy sometimes, though he normally asks. Anyway, I knew it would be perfect to stack on the antique grey stool, so I really beat it up and rounded off the egdes to age it. It's not quite as bright as it appears, but I used two shades of red, so you can see both as well as the wood in the worn places. I found that funky handcarved bunny the same day, and he looks quite at home in this rustic little spot. I also finished up the needlepunch from a few weeks ago. I haven't decided what I will do with it, but for now, it looks fine on Emma's lap.And last, here's a closer shot of the burlap pillow I finished a few days ago. I like the contrast of the rough texture next to the paisley cushions.So that's what's keeping me busy around here, along with all the usual Mom stuff. Why are Mondays always so wacky? I came down with a horrible cold Friday, so I woke up this morning with my sinuses throbbing. I just needed to get the kids dropped off at their schools, then I could have a little sofa time with some hot tea to ease into my day. We had a busy weekend, which really stinks when you don't feel well. Things were actually running pretty smoothly, only 9 minutes late getting out the door. No big deal-the boys like to get to school early, so technically, we weren't late. One practices his baritone, the other socializes for 30 minutes. We got to the middle school, and as I was getting my younger son's instrument out of the back of the car, I noticed he looked a little funny. As soon as I asked "Are you Okay?", he barfed, right there on the sidewalk. So we get him back in the car, and I finally get my older one dropped off at the high school. That took longer than usual because a light at a major intersection was out. Now we're settled in back at home, and I can tell he's feeling fine and is about to burst in here to tell me how bored he is, so all is normal for the moment...
I'm working on several projects as usual, hopefully those will be done later this week, so I can start on my guest bathroom re-do. My hubby put up new light fixtures in the bathrooms over the weekend, so I've been filling holes and touching up. I did get time to make a monogrammed burlap pillow to go on my bench on the front porch. I just repainted the bench for the last time, and am finally happy with it. It was stained when I got it, then painted burgandy, even though I wanted to paint it black way back then. Last summer I painted it chocolate brown, even though I wanted to paint it black, but didn't because I paint everything black. So now it's just how I want it, but I think I might sand the edges a little. Oh, the pillow, sorry. I'm easily sidetracked. I've been drooling over all the burlap pillow covers I've seen in the high end catalogs. Made with French feed sacks, or printed with birds,crowns and fleur de lis, I love them all, but they're way too spendy for me. So, I figured I could wing it, and make my own. This was less than 5 bucks to make. (Shh..Now don't tell, but I used a real ugly pillow with a cats and ivy print as the insert)Perfect for my bench, which gets some sun. My little bunny will come in at night when I remember. After I took the photo I added a little basket with some eggs, so I guess I've officially started decorationg for Easter. Well, that's it for now. Not exactly the all alone and quiet day I had planned watching HGTV and Forensic Files, but it's not often that I get to snuggle up with a little one anymore. (My baby is 12!) Did you know there are lots of old cartoons on Boomerang? We watched the Smurfs and ate cookies. Not a bad Monday at all!

Spring Break!

I'm sorry I've been so long between posts. I've been getting ready for the TDIPT Mercantile update on the 15th, and packing up for our Spring Break trip to Santa Fe! I spent most of the week shopping for all the ski stuff that was outgrown since last year. The boys will be skiing, and I'll just be shopping,eating,maybe a little sketching and eating some more. It's beautiful there, I love it so much! Below is a photo taken near the condo last year. Gorgeous!

Tale of a Toile Setee...

Did y'all hear that high pitched noise this morning? A kinda shrill sound that went on for about 5 minutes? That was me sqealing with joy at the delivery of my new antique setee... We've had an empty living room right off the foyer in this house since we moved in 4 years ago. We had big plans to enclose the open room and make it an office, but it never happened. I was looking for something cheap and neutral to put in there for the time being, and that's when I stumbled upon this dreamy old thing in a consignment store. I saw that toile and nearly wet my pants right there. It was so perfect I almost didn't even look closer because I knew it would be way out of my price range. But, it was so cute I had to! As it turned out, the rediculous price tag had allowed it to sit there since November, and they were ready to deal. It's about 80 years old, and was recently recovered and retied by an apparent expert in upholstery. But, I struggled with the fact that it was an antique - that kind of furniture needs a different kind of respect. It's not something to just use for a while, then sell at a garage sale. Not very practical either, with two boys, a dog, and a husband who would never sit on a toile sofa. I left the store. Went back the next day. Spent the next two days in every antique mall in the area searching out pieces like it for a price reference. I won't even tell you about the sleep loss or all the donuts,Girl Scout cookies and Mike & Ikes I had to eat before I decided for sure that I wanted it. I know I've dragged this out much longer than necessary, and I already told you it was here. In my house. So, I'll wind it up for now. It's probably not healthy to love a piece of furniture like this. But the seat cushions are down filled.

And it goes so well with all my stuff. Even Boston Terrier.

Now I'm in search of the perfect chairs to go with it. Cheap, perfect chairs. That might be a crisis and another post for another time. I'm gonna go take a nap now, you know where.

Whatcha Working on Wednesday...

Wow! Has another week gone by already? It's Whatcha Working on Wednesday over at My Country Home, and I have just a few things to share. This is my first Needlepunch project. It's coming along okay I think, though I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I just bought a book at Hobby Lobby, and taught myself. It bugs me that I have to stop punching, separate the floss and rethread the needle so often. I'm really impatient with things like that. I bought the hoop recommended in the book, but it still doesn't hold the fabric tight enough, so I have to adjust that often too. I'm enjoying it though, and I should have it done soon, just a few more little areas and then the background will be black with a little charcoal mixed in.

I've also completed several more of these guys. Some are for orders, and the others I'll add to my selling blog in a day or two.

This is what I should be workin' on. I've started this and need to finish. This is my lavendar bed. Well, there are a few other things in there too, but I have 4 kinds of lavendar that grow really well here. See, that little angel is prayin' for me to please get busy and pull out those weeds and ugly dead stuff. Today would be a perfect day to do it. It's 80 degrees out there, almost too hot in the direct Texas sun! I won't even show you my herb bed. It's crazy full of weeds and parsley, and the little gnome that lives there would be embarassed.

Whatcha Workin' On Wednesday

I've long been a fan of Leslie's Whatcha Workin On Wednesday, and this week I actually finished a project!
I found this sampler at the TS awhile back, it was half off, so I think I paid $1.09 or something like that. It's just stitched on aida cloth, but I liked the colonial design, and knew that the pastels would look as if they were faded after a dip in some tea. Here's the before. And no, that's not my neck that's all wrinkly in the reflection on the glass! The mat had gotten wet at some point and buckled. I'm not THAT old, y'all.

First I just stained it, but decided that one of the mauve shades was too hideous, so I picked those stitches out and re-did them with another floss. (sorry JG, whoever you are) Then I changed the 1993 to 1893 with some excess floss from the back. Then I decided that I couldn't stand the horrible seafoam green that I'm sure didn't exist in 1893, so I started picking those stitches out. About 5 minutes into this, I realized how much extra time I was going to have to put into my "quick" makeover, but it was too late to turn back. Anyhow, after 45 minutes and a crick in my neck, I had them all out, and restitched them in a pretty olive shade. I built a simple frame, crackled a little and painted black over moss green, distressed and all that. So now, much better...I think it loves me too.

The little bunny peeking in was a TS find that I painted this week too. He was terra cotta before. So that's what I finished this week. I'm working on several things for the TDIPT Mercantile, and my sellin' blog (currently bare-I'm a slacker). I'll give you a sneaky peak another time. Well, here it is mid February, and I'm just getting around to my first post of 2009. It's well established that I never keep my New Year's Resolutions. I still let an occasional naughty word slip, and have a pound or 18 to lose. But my plan to be a better blogger won't go completely out the window if I start now. 2009 did not start out as we had hoped, but we remember our blessings in spite of the lowest points and saddest days.

I'm sewing and painting again, so I'll be sharing some things soon. I'm working on some special things for the Mercantile Birthday month you read about above...

ABC Bread

Now that it's finally getting cooler here in North Texas, I'm spending a little more time in the kitchen making soups and baking. This bread is a favorite around here. It's easy, and the ingredients are usually in my pantry. Now don't freak out when you see how much oil or sugar is on the ingredient list. It's yummy, not guilt free. But it's gotta be nutritionally superior to a Twinkie, right? Oh, and the ABC is apple, banana, carrot, not like the ABC gum you were thinking of.

ABC Bread

1 cup oil

1 3/4 cup sugar

3 eggs

1 1/2 t. salt

1 1/2 t. baking powder

1 1/2t. baking soda

1/2 t. ground cloves

1/2 t. nutmeg

1 T. cinnamon

1 T. vanilla

3 cups flour

1 cup applesauce

1 cup grated carrots

1 cup mashed banana

Combine ingredients in order listed. Bake in two greased loaf pans at 350 for 45-50 minutes.

You can cut back on the oil and add more applesauce if you like, or use part brown sugar and heaping measurments of spices. Sometimes I sprinkle a cinnamon/sugar mixture on top before baking. I'm gonna go have a slice now with some hot Earl Grey.

I've had this blog set up for some time now, but have been too chicken to write my first post. The idea of my ramblings in print on the internet is scary. You know, proof of the insanity. I read somewhere though, that the first entry gets very few readers, so I should just get over myself and get on with it. I've been inspired by so many wonderful blogs, it's time I stop lurking and join in. So this is it, the first post. Whew! I'll leave you with a photo of one of my favorite vignettes in the house.
